On September 2, 2025, Debra had the honor of serving as a guest speaker at the Resiliency Summit for Animal Professionals, hosted by GRAZE (Growing Resiliency for Aquarium and Zoo Employees). This annual virtual event brings together professionals from zoos, aquariums, and animal care organizations worldwide to share strategies for strengthening resilience in an industry where stress, grief, and burnout are very real challenges.

Debra’s presentation centered on the importance of trauma-informed approaches in animal care workplaces. She highlighted how trauma doesn’t just affect the animals we serve, but also the professionals who dedicate their lives to their wellbeing. By recognizing the signs of trauma and responding with empathy, leaders and teams can create healthier, more supportive environments where staff feel valued and understood.
Her session emphasized that trauma-informed care is more than a philosophy—it’s a practical framework that can reduce burnout, improve communication, and foster resilience in high-stress environments. Debra reminded attendees that when animal professionals are supported in their own wellbeing, they are better equipped to provide exceptional care for the animals entrusted to them.
The Resiliency Summit itself is designed to be a place of connection and renewal. Offered free of charge, it provides participants with tools, real-world stories, and encouragement to navigate the emotional challenges of their work. Debra’s contribution added depth and inspiration to this year’s lineup, resonating deeply with the summit’s mission of strengthening the community of animal care professionals.
We are proud to celebrate Debra’s role in this important event and the ongoing impact of her work. Her message—that resilience grows strongest when workplaces are trauma-informed and compassionate—will continue to ripple through the field long after the summit’s conclusion.
