Trauma-Informed Method of Engagement for Youth Advocacy

At Silver Linings International, many of the principles that guide our work today have been developing for decades through direct practice, implementation, and collaboration.

One important milestone in that journey came in 2015, when our Founder and CEO, Debra Cady, LCSW, co-authored The Trauma-Informed Method of Engagement (TIME) for Youth Advocacy, published in Focal Point: Youth, Young Adults & Mental Health, a nationally recognized journal produced by Portland State University's Research and Training Center for Pathways to Positive Futures.

The article introduced the TIME Model, a practical framework for engaging youth and young adults with lived experience in ways that are safe, meaningful, and effective. Rather than simply inviting participation, the model emphasizes thoughtful preparation, authentic relationships, ongoing support, and intentional reflection to reduce harm while maximizing the value of lived experience.

How to Achieve Real, Lasting, and Positive Change

Change is hard for most people. In fact, two-thirds of people don’t like to leave their comfort zone,
ever. But most of the time, teaching your employees new skills, implementing a new process, or
doing any kind of improvement project means you’re expecting them to change in some way.

Change how they do their jobs.
Change what job duties they perform.
Change how to approach different aspects of their jobs.

Most organizations are aware of people’s aversion to change and try to make that transition easier by training their managers on how to assist their staff with accepting the changes. Or organizations get a consultant to prepare their employees for an upcoming change through workshopping sessions.

To add to the already "change phobic" population, we need to understand that globally, an astonishing 70% of individuals have encountered various forms of trauma. When confronted with yet another workplace transformation, the prospect of overwhelming stress looms large.

Discover in this white paper the powerful synergy of Appreciative Inquiry and Trauma-Informed Principles, which empowers change for leaders to help individuals navigate workplace changes with greater ease and reduced stress.

Top 5 Effective Ways
Trauma-Informed Supervisors
Retain Their Staff

Supervising in health and human services isn't easy. You entered the field to help people, both the individuals your organization serves and the employees you lead. Yet today's workforce faces significant challenges, including high stress, heavy caseloads, administrative burdens, and the risk of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). Without strong support, these pressures can lead to burnout, absenteeism, turnover, lower productivity, and reduced quality of care.

That's why staying connected to your team matters. Employees who feel valued, respected, and supported are more engaged, more likely to stay, and better equipped to provide quality care. Even small adjustments in your supervisory approach can have a meaningful impact on staff well-being, organizational culture, and client outcomes.

To better understand what works, Silver Linings International (SLI) spoke with successful supervisors across the U.S. and the employees they lead. Together, they shared practical insights into creating psychologically safe, supportive workplaces where both staff and clients can thrive.
