Big Movements Start Small

I just wrapped up a strategic planning session in North Carolina with a small but mighty group working on youth suicide prevention and awareness. It reminded me of one of my favorite quotes by Margaret Mead:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has."

This group truly embodied that spirit. They came together with deep commitment and compassion not with all the answers, but with a shared purpose. And that was enough to get the momentum going.
When we start with what we already have and what’s already working, the planning process flows naturally. Hope replaces overwhelm. Strengths rise to the surface. And from there, ideas for real change begin to take shape.
Together, we mapped out strategies for training and technical assistance to support their youth group "You Matter" scholarship winners young people ready to make an impact in their communities.
This is why I love using Appreciative Inquiry in strategic planning. Appreciative Inquiry is a strengths-based approach that helps groups see the good that’s already present and build from that foundation of possibility. At Silver Linings International, we use Appreciative Inquiry frameworks to guide organizations in creating actionable strategies that feel achievable, energizing, and sustainable.
For organizations looking to create real change whether in youth programs, mental health initiatives, or community-based work starting small and focusing on strengths can be a game-changer. Our courses are designed to help groups, whether in-person or hybrid, identify strengths, generate creative solutions, and leave with a clear plan for action.
💬 This session was a powerful reminder: meaningful change doesn’t start with a massive plan it starts with a few people who care deeply and take that first step together.
