We are proud to share highlights from Debra’s recent role as a guest speaker at the Resiliency Summit for Animal Professionals, hosted by GRAZE (Growing Resiliency for Aquarium and Zoo Employees). This annual virtual gathering brings together zoo, aquarium, and animal care professionals from around the world to focus on resilience in a field where stress, loss, and emotional fatigue are part of the work.
During her presentation, Debra spoke to the critical role trauma-informed practices play in animal care environments. She underscored an often-overlooked truth: trauma impacts not only the animals in our care, but also the people who devote their lives to protecting them. By learning to recognize trauma responses and lead with empathy, organizations can build healthier cultures where staff feel supported, respected, and understood.
Debra emphasized that trauma-informed care is not just a mindset, but a practical and actionable framework. When applied intentionally, it can reduce burnout, strengthen communication, and help teams remain resilient in high-pressure settings. Supporting the wellbeing of animal professionals ultimately strengthens the quality of care they are able to provide.
The Resiliency Summit itself is designed as a space for connection and renewal. Offered at no cost, it equips participants with tools, shared experiences, and encouragement to navigate the emotional realities of their work. Debra’s message aligned powerfully with the summit’s mission and resonated deeply with attendees.
We are honored to celebrate Debra’s contribution and the ongoing impact of her work. In the video interview accompanying this post, she reflects further on why trauma-informed, compassionate workplaces are essential for sustaining both people and the animals they serve.
