Yesterday, I had the privilege of facilitating the New York State Division of Employment and Income Support Programs (EISP) Staff Development Day in Albany. Under the inspiring leadership of Deputy Commissioner Valerie Figueroa, nearly 300 dedicated staff gathered in one room. The atmosphere was energized, hopeful, and deeply committed to strengthening the way this division serves New Yorkers.
Our purpose for the day was both simple and powerful: to reinforce cross-bureau connection and deepen psychological safety so that every role functions as a bridge that moves ideas, support, and purpose throughout the division. What unfolded was a genuine experience of people stepping out of their day-to-day silos and seeing the larger mission they collectively drive. Staff had the chance to slow down, connect, and reflect on the emotional weight of their work, which often involves moral distress, compassion fatigue, and moments where empathy is stretched thin.
Throughout the day, we explored what it means to pause with intention and respond with compassion, whether with clients facing overwhelming circumstances or with colleagues who are carrying their own invisible load. We talked openly about self-care, sustainability, and the importance of peer support practices that last longer than a single event. Even individuals who had never met before found themselves in meaningful conversations, sharing stories, challenges, and moments of laughter that bridged bureaus and roles.
What made the day particularly meaningful was how aligned it was with the heart of our work at Silver Linings International. Our approach is grounded in trauma-informed practice, emotional intelligence, and Appreciative Inquiry, all of which help teams build trust, connect with purpose, and strengthen their relational culture.
It was a privilege to be part of this day. What EISP staff accomplish each day is extraordinary, and supporting their well-being and connection is essential to sustaining that impact. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute and eager to continue walking alongside this team as they build bridges, strengthen relationships, and lead with compassion.
