May marks National Teen Self-Esteem Month, a vital time to raise awareness around the challenges today’s youth face in developing a strong sense of self-worth. Adolescence is already a time of significant transition and identity formation. Add to that the impacts of trauma, systemic inequities, and social pressures, and the result can be a fragile or fractured self-image that affects every area of a teen’s life.
At Silver Linings International, we believe that building self-esteem in youth starts with understanding their experiences—and creating environments where they are seen, heard, and empowered. That’s why our Trauma-Informed Youth Engagement offerings are designed not only to support healing, but also to foster the confidence, agency, and resilience that teens need to thrive.
Why Teen Self-Esteem Matters

Self-esteem influences how teens view themselves and their place in the world. It impacts decision-making, academic success, relationships, and mental health. Low self-esteem has been linked to anxiety, depression, and a greater likelihood of risky behaviors. For youth who’ve experienced trauma—whether personal, generational, or systemic—the road to self-acceptance can be especially steep.
Teens need more than platitudes and programs that overlook the deeper roots of their struggles. They need relationships and systems that honor their lived experiences and actively work to reduce re-traumatization.
Trauma-Informed Youth Engagement: A Path to Empowerment
Our Trauma-Informed Youth Engagement programs recognize that young people are experts in their own lives. We equip adults—educators, mentors, youth workers, and community leaders—with tools to engage teens through a trauma-informed lens. This means:
Creating safe, trusting environments where teens feel emotionally and physically secure.
Building authentic relationships that validate each teen’s voice and experience.
Understanding trauma’s impact on behavior, learning, and development—and responding with compassion, not punishment.
Promoting choice and empowerment to help teens regain a sense of control in their lives.
When we approach youth engagement with empathy and intentionality, we create conditions where self-esteem can flourish.
Supporting Teens Beyond the Month of May
National Teen Self-Esteem Month is a powerful reminder of what’s at stake—but our work must extend far beyond 31 days. Whether you're a parent, educator, community organizer, or mentor, you can be a catalyst for confidence in the lives of the teens you serve.
If you’re ready to deepen your understanding of trauma-informed practices and create more inclusive, healing-centered spaces for youth, explore our Trauma-Informed Youth Engagement offerings here.
